Right now the ACC may be 4th in the pecking order (assuming
the Big XII) is currently 5th. However, if we are just looking at football (since that is what is currently driving the bus now), then I could see the other conferences take a position that the ACC has not done enough to firm up its footing in the Darwinism exercise. All the ACC has done is trade the "ACC vs. Big East Debate" for the "ACC vs. Big XII Debate."
The reason I focused on football is because the ACC has the most private schools compared to only having 1 or 2 token private school. Also, the ACC (as a whole) seems to either have a hard time or is unwillingly the "basketball first" image. While there have been a handful of schools that have tried to do their part to improve the ACC's image in football. I am not sure if every school can say with confidence that it made a valiant effort.
One thing that concerns me about the ACC's future is the possibility that history may repeat itself and the ACC may find itself in the same internal debate the Big East was in before ultimately deciding to kick out the football schools. However, if the power conferences decide to reduce to 4 conferences, then logically the ACC should survive; ACC (East), Big Ten (North), Pac-12 (West), and SEC (South).
